As of May 31, 2025, the new API SQ specification is the current performance standard for gasoline engines. We are pleased to inform you that selected lubricants now fulfil all the requirements of this new standard. Get in touch with your AVENO contact person for advice.
What is API SQ?
API SQ is the successor to the previous API SP specification and was introduced by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to meet the increasing demands of modern engine technology. The specification places particular emphasis on:
- Fuel efficiency: Up to 16% higher efficiency compared to API SP.
- LSPI protection with aged oil: Thanks to the new LSPI Aged Oil Test, protection against low-speed pre-ignition is ensured even after extended oil use.
- Improved cleanliness: Fewer deposits and better oxidation stability help keep pistons clean and extend engine life.
- Reduced ash content: With a maximum sulfate ash content of 0.9%, the service life of gasoline particulate filters (GPF/OPF) is supported.
- Enhanced low-temperature properties: Improved cold-temperature pumpability ensures reliable lubrication during cold starts.
